Special Freesia Group Lunch at Restaurant Carpe Diem, El Perelló, Wednesday, 5th July, 2006 (traducción en castellano más abajo)

10 July 2006 | Past events
Over 60 supporters of the Freesia Group (raising monies for cancer charities in Spain) met on Wednesday, 5th July, for their monthly lunch and get together.  One of the main reasons for the event was their bi-annual presentation of cheques to the two associations they support – the AECC – Asociación Española Contra el Cáncer (Spanish Association against Cancer) and the CNIO – Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Oncológicas (National Centre for Oncology Research).

Present at the lunch were the President of the AECC, Tarragona Province, Sr. Luís Vives Ayora,  and Sra. Maite Martínez Subías, the local President of the Tarragona branch.  We also had the pleasure of receiving Sr. Jesús Hernández Carabias, National Project Manager from the CNIO in Madrid. Individual cheques for 7,000 Euros were presented to each of the associations on behalf of the Freesia Group.  These amounts represent the overall efforts of the group from several events within the last six months.  The events included a sponsored walk, quiz night, car treasure hunt, sales from one of our members’ regular hand-made jewellery, car boot sales, raffles, donations, and, not least of all, our most successful event to date – the 2nd Family Fun Run on the 7th May.

Apart from the wonderful surroundings, great service and fabulous food at the Carpe Diem – a big thank you to the team! The highlight of the day was the presentation from Jesús Hernández who explained in detail how the CNIO has developed during the last eight years from a small team of government-funded scientists to the world-renowned institute (over 450 people) working to find a cure for cancer.  Jesús explained where the money goes that is raised from our events and how it helps towards attaining the CNIO’s short- and long-term goals

During the lunch the ex-President and founder member of the Freesia Group, Alison Owens, was presented with a medal and an official letter from Sr. Vives on behalf of AECC as recognition of her hard work and consistent determination for the group since it’s instigation in 2002

A big thank you to all who attended, and to all who have in some way or other helped to achieve this superb figure of over 61,000 Euros in the last three-and-a-half years.

We meet for lunch on the 1st Wednesday of every month in different venues around the Tarragona province.
